This is the Town that Fish Built!

Petersburg is a quaint and very friendly, waterfront community located on the northern shores of Mitkof Island; just one of a thousand islands that comprise the Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska. Petersburg's main economic base is commercial fishing, and home to the largest fishing fleet and some of the best fishing experiences in Southeast.

The Petersburg area is ideally suited to the outdoor enthusiast with boating experience, looking for a self-guided boating adventure.

Jensen’s Boat Rentals will provide you with a sea-worthy, dependable, and well-maintained, 18’ - 22' aluminum skiff; outfitted as needed for your excursion.
   Take this opportunity to
get out on the water and fill your day with sport fishing, cruising/exploring, glacier viewing, whale watching and wildlife viewing, or head for a remote beach and go camping, hunting or hiking.
  • Sport Fishing:  Saltwater sport fish for halibut, rock fish, salmon, or Dungeness crab; or freshwater sport fish for trout and steelhead. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game provides a seasonal chart for your favorite fishing activity.
  • Camping:  Choose one of eleven  US Forest Service cabins (direct saltwater access) in the area, and experience incomparable solitude while camping, hiking, or viewing wildlife in the lush, coastal rain forests of the Tongass National Forest.
  • Cruising & Exploring:  Pack a lunch and take a relaxing cruise, and explore just a few of the many pristine, remote estuaries, bays, inlets and sloughs, along the hundreds of miles of our island coastlines.
  • Hiking/Backpacking:  Walk the beaches-have a picnic, or take a wilderness hike to an inland lake, waterfall, or make your way along the innumerable creeks,  streams and small rivers.
  • Alaska Photo-Ops: During the summer, the waters of Southeast Alaska are the fertile feeding grounds for the humpback and orca whales. You will find sea lions lounging on their rookeries or taking a time out on the local channel buoys. To the southeast of Petersburg, you may - from a safe distance, view the very active and spectacular Le Conte glacier. On occasion you will catch a glimpse of local wildlife: black or brown bear, Sitka black-tail deer, moose, wolf; and observe our plentiful bird life - the American bald eagle, seabirds, waterfowl and migratory birds that are here for the summer.
  • Hunting: Bear hunters arrive in April-May for the spring hunt; deer hunters arrive in August.
  • Local Lodging: We have many very friendly and comfortable vacation rentals and  local hotels to serve you.
